What's included

Your melasma consultation, with a doctor behind it

  • Diagnosis first

Not all dark patches are melasma: the doctor confirms it from your answers and your photos before prescribing.

  • A plan in cycles

Prescription depigmenting treatment, given in cycles and adjusted to your skin type.

  • Sun protection, done properly

The sun keeps melasma alive: learn to protect your skin every day so the results last.

  • Honest expectations

The aim is to lighten the patches and keep them at bay, and the doctor will tell you what’s realistic in your case.

What melasma is

Melasma consists of brown patches with poorly defined edges, almost always symmetrical, appearing mainly on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. It’s caused by a mix of predisposition, hormones and sun: it’s common during pregnancy or with contraceptives, and more frequent in skin that tans easily.

What the doctor assesses

  • The distribution of the patches and how long they’ve been evolving.
  • The hormonal component: pregnancy, breastfeeding and hormonal treatments.
  • Your skin type, because it determines which regimen is safe and how intensively it can be treated.
  • What you’ve already tried: depigmenting products, peels or laser, and how your skin responded.

Sun protection is half the treatment

Melasma darkens with small doses of sun and even with visible light. Without daily sunscreen — in winter too, on cloudy days too — no treatment achieves results that last. The doctor will tell you how to protect your skin realistically.

Prescription depigmenting treatments

There are prescription depigmenting treatments that lighten the patches progressively. They are prescribed in cycles, with breaks, because prolonging them too far can be counterproductive; and several of them can’t be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Some irritation at the start is normal: the doctor will explain how to introduce them little by little.

What you can expect

Improvement is usually visible from 8-12 weeks. Melasma tends to come back with sun and hormonal changes, so the plan also covers how to maintain the result. If the patches don’t fit with melasma, the doctor will recommend a face-to-face examination.

Medications

Medications the doctor may consider in your melasma consultation

These are the options considered for this treatment, not a recommendation. Your registered doctor reviews your consultation and suggests the treatment that suits you best.

  • Hydroquinone 4% gel (with glycolic acid)

    • Targets patches only
    • Lighter gel base
    • Supervised course

Depigmenting gel with glycolic acid for stubborn dark spots; supervised 60- to 90-day course. Depigmenting gel with glycolic acid, with a lighter texture. Apply a thin layer at night only on the spots, on clean dry skin, and wash your hands afterwards. It is used in limited cycles (about 3 or 4 months in a row at most) with breaks as directed by the doctor. It may irritate sensitive skin more than the cream. Strict daily sun protection is essential. Must not be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding or while trying to conceive. Treatment duration to be assessed by the doctor: 1 tube · 60 days.

Reviews

What our patients say

  • “Being able to keep talking to the doctor after the first reply is what I value most. I’ve written to him several times to tell him how I was getting on and I’ve always had an answer tailored to my case, not a template. It’s reassuring to know there’s someone on the other end.”
  • “From the start they made it clear what can and can’t be dealt with in writing, and I liked that. The questionnaire asks its questions respectfully, and the doctor replies calmly and explains the reasoning behind each recommendation. I came back later about something else and the experience was just as good.”
  • “For me, discretion came first. The emails I get only say there’s news in my private area, without mentioning why, and nobody outside the medical team sees my answers. I was able to consult about something sensitive with complete peace of mind.”
  • “I’ve had two consultations and both were handled with the same care: clear questions, simple instructions and a detailed reply. When I wrote later to let the doctor know how I was getting on, he took it into account and adjusted whatever was needed.”
  • “It was the first time I’d seen a doctor about anything online and I had my doubts. It was all straightforward: a clear questionnaire, a written reply from a doctor who had obviously read my case, and the chance to ask about anything I didn’t understand. I did it all from my phone without any hassle.”

FAQ

Common questions about melasma

What does the melasma consultation and treatment include?

The melasma consultation and treatment includes an assessment of your dark patches by a registered doctor from your photos, a plan in cycles with sun protection, and follow-up messages to review your progress. You receive the reply in writing in less than 15 minutes, online and from anywhere in Europe.

How long does melasma treatment take to work?

Melasma usually starts to visibly improve after 8–12 weeks of treatment. The doctor prescribes it in cycles and reviews your progress with you through new photos, because using depigmenting products for too long can be counterproductive. Consistency and sun protection make the difference.

Can I treat melasma during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, melasma is managed mainly with strict sun protection and skincare that is safe for that stage, as some depigmenting products are not suitable. Mention it in the questionnaire: the registered doctor adapts your plan to your situation and explains what you can use now and what to leave for later.

How much does online melasma treatment cost?

The melasma consultation and treatment costs €40 as a single payment with one consultation included, or €25/month with the monthly subscription, with no minimum commitment and follow-up by message. As the plan works in cycles, the subscription lets you review your progress with your doctor. You choose the option at the end of the questionnaire.

What is melasma and why does it appear?

Melasma is dark brown or greyish patches that appear mainly on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. It is linked to sun exposure, visible light and hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or the contraceptive pill, and it has a genetic component. It is more common in women, although men can get it too.

Do melasma patches go away for good?

Melasma tends to come back with sun exposure and hormonal changes, even after good progress. The realistic goal of treatment is to visibly lighten the patches and keep them under control, with consistent sun protection and new treatment cycles when needed.

Is sunscreen really that important for melasma?

Yes, it is the foundation of all melasma treatment. The patches darken with small amounts of sun and even with visible light, including in winter and through windows. Without daily sun protection, no depigmenting treatment achieves lasting results.
